The Skinny on Tuesday

Because of all the beautiful people who make beautiful clothes and show them on beautiful Tuesday, I have a list, a lip and a little peek of each one. Photos are Marcio Madeira unless other wise indicated, courtesy of

Betsey Johnson – Costume check..this is why we go to these things. To see just what kind of fuss Betsey will put into her creations. Is this not costume wear at play? I am thinking that the New York City Ballet better check these frocks out. She is a silly girl for the silly days we want to play dress-up.

Brian Reyes – For the more practical of us that just want to put on a killer cocktail dress and go to a party, Brian delivers a style that is not only comfortable and stylish, but definitely polished. R’el Dade is stunning in this dress.

Badgley Mischka – Gone are the days when Mark Badgley and James Mischka scared us a little with yards of dark fabrics and miles of chains. This team has refined and become one of the most elegant designers in the show. Every single piece was a stunner. Each model was perfect for the piece they wore. Everything just went perfectly right for them. Who would not want to own one of these dresses and wear it (everyday, Cinderella).

Christian CotaI’m thinking 1940’s, after the War and everyone was wondering where that flirty girl they fell in love with went. The models were cute enough to put ribbons on and take to a party. Sumptous fabrics rich with color with that nice silky feeling all over when you put them on.  I loved every piece in this show. Where am I going to put all these clothes? Wink. Dennis Basso – What can any girl say except that she hope to own, wear, borrow, or steal one Dennis Basso evening dress and be invited to one of those gazillion dollar parties on a yacht in the Mediterranean to look ravishingly fabulous at. When you see a show like this , your breath is taken away as the first dress floats onto the runway and you finally get to breathe again when the last one disappears. Wait, come back. I would rather watch than breathe. Incredible  collection, that seemed to have electricity sparking from each gown. This is every girl’s dream.
G Star – Although big with the Rock Star set, G Star, for the most part takes a lot of guts to wear. I think I know just which rockers they have in mind when designing them, I think these shorts are a little too short for me. And I want to see the guy who can pull this one off.
Halston – New to Halston, Marios Schwab designed a light and fluttery collection that looks beautiful working the runway not to mention model favorite Marlena Szoka who is in every photo. There’s my color!

Malandrino – The collection was aptly named Nomad for it’s “Trip Around the World” feel. I could so see Samantha Brown from the Travel Channel in these two numbers, scouting out pottery in old Mexico or riding a camel in Cairo. I could so see me in the turquoise jewel in Tahiti…

Marc by Marc Jacobs – Is it perhaps that we are all so worried about the horrendous economy that we no longer take ourselves seriously and have elevated Mr. Jacobs to Ring Master of this circus, there are tents, after all. He certainly knows how to draw a star studded crowd. Seriously, I dare anyone to take on the Fashion Police in either of these two outfits.

Max Azria This team has already done so many shows this week they nearly own the Runway. Most of Max’s signature collection looks as if he used the scissors liberally with the exception of one gorgeous gown that I am trying to figure out how to get.

Mulberry – The birthday party funfetti look to this collection makes me wonder if designer Emma Hill was thinking of ways to whimsically cheer us all up from our recession blues (or greens, or pinks).  One model was even walking a little black pug with a ruff collar. Don’t forget to take your balloon home!

Rodarte – The buzz was so loud around this design house that we thought we had the attack of the killer bees. No, it was just the psycho tattoo artists that got loose in the tent prior to the show. This show was all about theatrics. The dry ice runway, the native tattooing and the outfits that looked as if the tigers got to them before the design team could stop them. Ah, but people will be talking about this show for a long time.
Tibi – The tropical color splashes of such fun that it feels like breakfast poolside at a lovely resort with only the pool boy to disturb your leisurely morning. Designer Amy Smilovic, wants us all to forget about winter and think only of soft Spring flowers. OK, sounds good to me.

Vera Wang – Here is a designer that knows how to make a woman look lovely. Wedding dresses, check. Lingerie, check, new spring collection – well…think black. Lots and lots of black. Every single piece was black. Some had disturbing chains. Um, I like her wedding dresses better. Vera, are you secretly cannelling your inner biker chick?
