Gone are the cowboy boots and silver belt buckles. Ralph Lauren dipped into the 1900’s era of dewy eyed beauties of the soft deco sort who wore cloche hats of the Great Roaring 20’s or drove around in butter yellow ’37 Cords. The color palette was right off one of the most Art Deco streets in America: Ocean Drive, Miami Beach. Soft pinks, sea greens, daffodil yellows, faded sky blues, brilliant whites and the all important shiny silver dazzled attendees. Since diamonds are vulgar before cocktails, semi-precious gems are a must, in long strands, if you please. There were, however, plenty of after dark styles, enough to softly shimmer way into the starry night with beaded gowns and feather boas, collars and skirts. Silks and chiffons added to the illusion of the Great Gatsby where the only thing missing were mustachioed gentlemen with leather pilot goggles to escort the ladies to an afternoon tea. But Ralph Lauren didn’t leave us in the lurch, ladies got to play Man-Dressing with fabulous pant suits in true Deco Style complete with wide legs and snug vests. The absolutely most stunning piece was the powder pink cropped leather jacket with asymmetrical zip. Shoes, though holding to the color palette, were thankfully modern styled. The entire collection was like one genteel garden party. “Darling, would you hold my fan and pass me a champagne?”
