“A gentleman is one who puts more into the world than he takes out.” -George Bernard Shaw
Simon Spurr does exquisite menswear. It would be easy to stop with those words but it would slight the incredible workmanship that the designer put into this collection for Fall Winter 2012. The colors were rich and masculine: ripe blackberry, ash gray, wild heather, soot, and steel. The tailoring was perfect, to the last stitch. Details, like umbrellas, kid driving gloves, snood scarves, bags, even buttons and buckles were as precise as a symphony. Everything was in place and placed there for a reason. With precise underpinning and deliberate planning, even more experimental elements, like a large dog-tooth check purple suit, camouflage shirts, and croc embossed leather sleeves were added without taking away the air of masculinity. There was an anorak poncho of grey woolens and weatherproof fabric that finished the suit underneath with enough cool aplomb making to make it look more polished and finished. If the cut of the suit makes the man, then Simon Spurr is about the business of making some very convincing gentlemen.
