For the Spring 2013 Collection, Max Azria said he was inspired by Helmut Newton’s black and white photography and the femme fatal. Granted, much of Newton’s subjects wore very little clothing at all, so we assume Azria meant if they were wearing clothing. The clever play on light with the use of bands of satin and leather sewn at angles did indeed give the impression of black and white photography. But just the same, we are grateful that Azria stuck to his colors with his signature corals and shots of pink, both dark and light. The ladylike quality with the addition of lace and sheer fabrics gave the entire collection a light, airy feeling. Even the black pieces were light as a spring breeze. Looks were paired with envelope clutches, handbags and perforated sandals. Everything came below the knee or was full length. Max Azria is continuing his trend of covering women’s legs, claiming that women aren’t always happy with them. He says, with just a twinkle in his eye, that he is helping them show their lovely shape in a more appealing way with just a hint of fabric. We cannot agree more.
