The drama, the smokey, secretive runway entrance, the feathers and shiny suits, the Rock Star cast (both on the runway and the Front Row); This is the Cult of Prabal Gurung. Set at Pier 57 because, quite simply; Lincoln Center is too small, this is the runway to see and be seen. What is it all about; this fierce and intense loyalty and desire to see the designer from Nepal succeed? Is it his humble and personal demeanor? Or the mysterious, exotic element he brings to Fashion Week? Perhaps it has to do with the gratitude Parabal expresses in being able to live the American Dream and his genuine surprise that it actually is happening to him. Whatever it is, we don’t want it to stop. The Spring 2013 Collection was all about drama. Satin tuxedos, tailored pants under chiffon demi-gowns, rich colors, and feathers all screamed DRAMA. Piercing white, charcoal black, blood red, smokey gray, ink water blue; elements of mystery and thrilling lives lived in the big cities of the world. The dresses had low waists, wasp waists, or no waists; but they had intricately sewn feathers, almost like ticking, sewn into the fabric making you think of Marlene Dietrich backstage in her dressing room. Maybe what we love about Prabal Gurung is that he transports us to another place that somehow seems the height of glamour. Wherever it is, we want to go there, because we love all that drama.
