For his Spring 2013 Collection, designer Oliver Rousteing (who is only 27 years old) revived and reworked his Resort collection by adding some major embellishments. It is said he was in Miami for a trip and the Art Deco inspired him. We like that. It must be why we like him so much. His fall collection has a pink jacket that we are still lusting for. But what we see here are harlequin patterns and intricate knotted and woven insets that are true to the House’s Couture core. The effect is nothing short of stunning. The basic shapes are reminiscent of all of his collections so far with Balmain (he only signed on in March of 2011 which in itself is amazing); boxy yet long lines, high waists and broad Versace-type shoulders from back in Gianni’s day. The exception with this collection is that the shoulders are predominant and alarmingly 80’s. What brought the looks back to this era was the silver shoes, insets and fabrics. Also having a limited color palette (only taxi yellow and icy blue was shown with the monochrome) smartly galvanized the collection. The only question was the denim dress in the middle. I suppose as a young man, he can’t imagine life without denim. Probably the most exciting part of the show were the jackets and coats. They are truly stunning works of art. We are watching for fantastic things from this young French designer.
